Laser skin resurfacing can be used to address a range of skin concerns, from uneven texture and sun damage to fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation and certain types of scarring. By creating controlled treatment zones within the skin, laser resurfacing also stimulates a natural healing response, including collagen production and remodelling over time.

What Is Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Laser skin resurfacing uses targeted laser energy to create controlled heat into deeper layers of tissue to initiate the body’s natural healing response. As the treated tissue heals, collagen production and remodelling occur within the skin, with changes continuing progressively after the initial recovery period.

For suitable patients, laser skin resurfacing may help to:

  • improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • improve uneven skin texture
  • reduce the appearance of certain types of acne scars, stretch marks and other scarring
  • address selected pigmentation irregularities and signs of sun damage
  • improve the overall texture and appearance of the treated skin.

There are different types of laser resurfacing, including ablative and non-ablative fractional laser treatments.

Ablative lasers, such as fractional CO₂ lasers, create controlled microscopic areas of ablation within the skin. Non-ablative fractional lasers deliver energy beneath the surface without removing the outer layer in the same way.

The appropriate technology and treatment intensity depend on factors including the concern being addressed, treatment area, skin type, medical history and the amount of recovery associated with the proposed treatment.

Individual responses and outcomes vary, and the degree of change that can be achieved will depend on the patient and the treatment performed.

You Laser MT: Mixed-Technology Laser Resurfacing

Oo La La uses the You Laser MT for fractional laser skin resurfacing. The system combines two different laser wavelengths within the same platform:

  • 10,600 nm fractional CO₂ laser – an ablative laser used for controlled resurfacing of the skin.
  • 1540 nm non-ablative fractional laser – delivers fractional laser energy into deeper layers without ablating the skin’s surface in the same way as CO₂.

The You Laser MT allows these wavelengths to be used individually or as part of a mixed-technology treatment, depending on the treatment plan.

Fractional CO2 Laser Resurfacing – 10,600 nm

Fractional CO2 laser resurfacing uses a 10,600 nm wavelength to create microscopic treatment columns in the skin while leaving surrounding areas untreated.

Unlike traditional full-field resurfacing, fractional technology treats a proportion of the skin within the treatment area. The surrounding untreated tissue forms part of the body’s healing response.

Fractional CO2 laser may be considered for concerns involving the surface texture and appearance of the skin, including certain types of wrinkles, sun-related skin changes and scarring.

1540 nm Non-Ablative Fractional Laser

The You Laser MT also incorporates a 1540 nm non-ablative fractional wavelength.

Rather than ablating the surface in the same way as a CO₂ laser, the 1540 nm wavelength delivers controlled thermal energy into deeper layers of the skin.

This creates microscopic treatment zones beneath the surface and initiates a healing and remodelling response within the treated tissue.

How Does Mixed-Technology Laser Resurfacing Work?

The You Laser MT allows the 10,600 nm CO₂ and 1540 nm wavelengths to be delivered according to the treatment being performed.

During mixed-technology treatment, the 1540 nm non-ablative fractional laser creates microscopic treatment zones deeper within the skin, while the 10,600 nm fractional CO₂ laser creates controlled micro-ablative treatment zones at the surface.

This allows different layers of the skin to be addressed within the treatment plan.

The appropriate laser mode, settings and treatment intensity are determined following clinical assessment. Not every patient requires the same treatment approach, and a more intensive treatment is not necessarily appropriate for every skin type or concern.

 

What Areas Can Be Treated?

Laser resurfacing can be performed on selected areas of the face and body, depending on an individual assessment.

Common treatment areas can include:

  • full face
  • around the mouth (perioral area)
  • around the eyes (periorbital area)
  • neck
  • décolletage
  • selected areas of the body
  • areas affected by suitable scars, including some acne scars.

 

How Many Laser Resurfacing Treatments Will I Need?

There is no single number of laser resurfacing treatments that is appropriate for everyone.

The recommended number of treatments depends on various factors. Some treatment plans may involve a single procedure followed by assessment of the response, while others may involve additional treatments.

Your practitioner will discuss the proposed treatment plan with you following assessment. Additional treatment should only be considered where clinically appropriate rather than on the assumption that a particular number of sessions will be required.

 

When Will I See Results From Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Changes following laser skin resurfacing occur progressively and will vary between patients.

The skin initially needs time to heal from the procedure. Changes in the appearance or texture of the treated area may become noticeable as this initial healing progresses.

Further changes may occur over the following weeks and months as tissue remodelling continues.

The extent of improvement, how quickly it becomes apparent and how long it lasts depend on the individual, the concern being treated and the treatment performed.

Individual responses and outcomes vary, and laser resurfacing cannot guarantee a particular cosmetic result.
